3 healthy habits you can start before the Holiday indulging begins

———-

The holidays bring family and friends together, time off work (hopefully!) and alllll the food. We love it and would never complain about the opportunity for guilt-free indulging but if there are some healthy habits we can start before the holidays begin, we're all for it. That's the exact reason we’ve rounded up three healthy habits you can implement now to get a head start on the inevitable holiday indulging. Enjoy!

SPIRULINA

Spiru-what?? Yes, we didn’t know what this was either but after a little research, this is some seriously amazing stuff you need to know about.

Spirulina is known as the original ‘superfood’. It’s a natural algae that is very high in plant based protein, antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Although spirulina is naturally found in large bodies of water, companies like SpiraVeg (based in Calgary, AB) are able to grow and harvest spirulina without compromising its quality or nutrient make-up.

The best part is that the spirulina from SpiraVeg is odourless and tasteless so it’s perfect to add to smoothies, salad dressing or even water.

Another reason we love the raw, live and fresh spirulina is that the cells are intact and it’s 100% bioavailable. Did we lose you there? Let us break that down a bit 👉 Intact cells and 100% bioavailability simply means that no cells have been damaged during the harvesting process and that your body is able to digest and absorb the spirulina and actually benefit from all the nutrients.

Spirulina can also be found in a powdered form but the drying process can damage the cells resulting in vitamin loss,  antioxidant damage and enzyme destruction, not to mention, it tastes horrible.

SpiraVeg currently ships to BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, QC. If you live in Calgary, you can also opt to pick it up yourself.

If you aren’t able to use it all at once, no worries, just freeze it into ice cubes so it’s easy to add to your smoothies...which leads us to our next healthy habit 👇

SMOOTHIES

In our opinion, smoothies are one of the easiest ways to add a range of nutrients to your diet and surprisingly enough, they can actually taste amazing. Here’s our go-to recipe right now. You can thank us later 😉

  • 1 scoop of all natural peanut butter (Munch organic all natural peanut butter is a great option)
  • 1 banana
  • Handful of frozen spinach
  • Spoonful of SpiraVeg
  • 1 scoop of Canadian Protein All Natural Vegan Protein Blend - Vanilla*
  • A little bit of water
  • A few ice cubes

Blend it all together and enjoy this surprisingly creamy, nutritious smoothie to start your day, get you through that afternoon slump or even for a low calorie dinner option.

This protein powder is one of the best we've ever tried and it's really affordable compared to some we've seen before. Plus, it's a Canadian company!

We’re definitely on the smoothie train right now because we know the amount of eggnog , sugar cookies and other holiday treats that are around the bend.

WATER

Yup, you’ve heard it before and we’re pretty certain you’ll keep hearing it. That’s because, well, it really is SO important. We won’t go into all the reasons why sufficient water intake is so important or the fact that every single cell in your body needs water to function at peak performance but we’ll just say this: We challenge you to have one huge glass of water before your first coffee of the day. We've been trying this lately and love how we feel!

We didn't want to give you a huge list of health tips that would be completely overwhelming. Hopefully keeping it to three healthy habits that are all easy to implement gave you a few healthy tips (or reminders) that you can put into action before the holidays are here so that you go into them feeling your absolute best!
