What inspired you to start your business?
I started making candles for myself approximately 5 years ago and found the process of creating and mixing to be very therapeutic and invigorating for my creative side. My main career is in health care and is very scientific, demanding, and detail-oriented. I found candle making to provide a great balance while surprisingly using a lot of similar skills that I use in my main career. When I knew I was buying too many candle supplies for this to just be a hobby, I jumped into to opening my business.
How would you describe your business?
My business is about sustainable, customizable, and accessible joy – products you can feel good about buying and giving at reasonable price points. I love using fragrances that create a special reaction for people – either by finding a perfect favourite, or evoking a memory through scent. I keep collecting new fragrances and now have over 100 – I really want people to find what they love and the name “As You Wish” was chosen to show I love to customize products so people can get exactly what they love without breaking the bank.
Regarding sustainability, I use only renewable sources of wax in my company – soy or beeswax. I avoid any waxes or additives that are derived from petroleum. I deliberately choose lightweight tin vessels which use fewer resources/fuels for transport and can be reused/repurposed after the candle is complete. I choose fragrances that are free from parabens and phthalates. I minimize use of plastic, water, and extraneous packaging in my candle making. I choose accessible price points with the hope that people will buy candles and give candles to spread joy. I also create gift boxes (the only time I use packaging) to help make thoughtful gift-giving an easy process for busy people.
I also love colour. I source many different colours of candle tins, to both pair with fragrance and themes. It opens up the creative options available in putting a collection together or in creating a custom product for a wedding, event, fundraiser, or wholesale order.
I make each and every candle by hand-pouring and mixing in small batches. I take care in everything I make and choose as many Canadian suppliers as I can. I truly try to create candles you can feel good about burning and gifting.
What’s your bestselling product?
My 2 oz. mini soy wax candle tin – I feature over 100 fragrances in over 24 candle tin colours.
Why do you think it’s so popular?
They burn for 10 hours, yet cost the same as a fancy coffee. They are a great size to try out multiple fragrances. They make a great give away gift, to take while you travel, or to buy an assortment as a group gift. The colours and fragrances I use can adapt to any season, occasion, fragrance preference, colour palette. I’ve made them as wedding favours, party favours, fundraisers for charities and schools, and group gifts for teachers, coworkers, etc. They are extremely versatile and fun!
What’s your favourite product that you make?
I love the Hanging Fragrance Diffusers that I make for car mirrors or closets. They are a no flame way to take your favourite fragrance with you and they last for weeks. I love that I can change them based on my mood.
What’s your favourite local Winnipeg business?
Living in Winnipeg, we are so lucky to have so many amazing local restaurants. My favourite hang out is a family-owned and operated multi-generation restaurant called Silver Heights Restaurant and Lounge. I always feel welcome and at home there.
