What inspired you to start your business?

From a young age I had always loved creating artwork using many different medians and this continued through my adult life as a hobby. I would create art pieces for friends and family and just really enjoyed the inspiration and creative outlet that it provided me. A year and a half ago I decided to take an early retirement and moved to the province of New Brunswick and settled in beautiful Maces Bay. I continued with my art and realized that my creations may be something others would enjoy just as much as I enjoy making them and as a result Lisa Creative was born. These wool art creations can be seen at local farmers market in and around Saint John NB.

How would you describe your business?

Lisa Creative is about making life a little more colourful by creating wool art inspired by my natural surroundings. Wool art is created by needling wool into a felt base. Wool in itself is a warm, eco-friendly and versatile medium. There are many types of wool that can be used and all have different results. My favourite wool is merino roving which is very soft and luxurious. In addition I also use knitting wool and a combination of other wools and fibres to create these art pieces. The needles used come in different sizes and are equipped with barbs to push the wool through the felt.

Once the art pieces is finished it is adhered to a 5×5 wood shadow box. Larger art pieces are done in the same manner utilizing a 15×15 shadow box frame. Each piece is unique and original as no two are alike.

What are your bestselling products?

The smaller 5×5 art pieces are the bestseller due to their size and price point at $20. They are a great original art gift idea for any occasion.

Why do you think it’s so popular?

The wool art created is very colourful, textured and tactile which brings people in to view them. They are often mistaken for paintings from a distance until they come closer and realize it’s wool. The reaction is one of surprise and a smile.

The small creations are packed with colour and detail of local landscapes and maritime themes as well as other subject matter. All of my landscape scenes are renditions of actual photos I have taken in the area which adds to the uniqueness of the piece.

In addition to this the size and price point add to the popularity of these pieces.

What’s your personal favourite product?

I love the sunsets that we have in Maces Bay so my favourite wool art piece are those of the sea and colourful skies.

My Mom and I met Lisa and we each bought one of her 5×5″ wool art pieces when we attended the Queen Square Farmers’ Market. She’s a lovely person and talented artist. I’m excited to hang my new wool art up on my collage wall where I showcase original art from artists I meet on my travels.
