The Copper Bell is a Canadian candle company based in Shawnigan Lake, BC. They’ve been creating soy wax candles and giving them clever names since 2019. Learn more about The Copper Bell and what their bestselling candle is in our interview below.
What inspired you to start your business?
Katrina started this business in 2019 as a creative outlet that filled a need of great smelling headaches with no crappy side effects. After having her first baby, she found that she was getting headaches from paraffin candles and stopped burning candles all together! As she learned more about candle ingredients, she discovered she could make amazing room-filling scents without the annoying headaches setting in.
The business boomed during Covid and became a full-time job. In late 2022, Katrina found out she was expecting her second baby! The business took a back seat to a new family member, a cross-province move, and a return to working in the real world. The copper bell laid dormant for over a year until Katrina revived the brand with the help of Lisa and her husband, Ryan! The business moved from Ontario to British Columbia and is exploring its new foundation.
How do you describe your business?
We create handmade candles in our home studio in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia. We use soy wax, paraben and phthalate-free fragrances, hemp wicks, and a wicked sense of humour to craft great smelling products with eye-catching names and labels.
Customers love our dry sense of humour and a product that fits in with their curated home styles.
What’s your bestselling product?
Our all-time best-selling product is our grapefruit mimosa scented candle which we’ve named Day Drinking. A close second is our layered candle option. These candles offer a different burning experience each time you light them! Alternating layers of complementary scents finished off with a funny or motivating label of your choice!
Why do you think it’s so popular?
Our Day Drinking candle is eye-catching! It’s the label that always draws people’s attention in person, and the scent can’t be beat. It’s bright and fresh and a huge crowd-pleaser that can be burned all year long. The cheeky name appeals perfectly to our target audience who love a bit of crass humour.
What’s your personal favourite product from your shop right now?
My current favourite is from our summer collection, a candle called Resting Beach Face. It’s the candle I reached for the most while the business was on hiatus and I’m thrilled to be bringing it back for our customers to enjoy again in 2026!
What’s your favourite local shop?
My favourite small shop is a coffee roaster out of Guelph, ON called Coffee Stiles. She makes great flavours and offers every one of her flavoured coffees in decaf as well!
