What inspired you to start your business?
I’ve always been a candle lover and someone who likes to figure out how things work. When Covid hit and I couldn’t easily access my go-to candles, I decided to start researching the process so I could try to make my own.
I dove deep and realized the candles I always burned had some pretty nasty additives, which led me down a path of not only creating my own candles.. but candles that I felt confident burning and would be excited to promote to my family and friends!
How do you describe your business?
That Basic Wick is a one-(wo)man show.
I am a mom to a beautiful 4-year old girl, and work full-time outside of my home. That Basic Wick is a passion project for me, it gives me so much joy. I spent over 2 years doing testing and development before launching my brand. I needed to be 100% sold on my product before releasing it to the universe. My goal was to create strong-smelling, long-lasting, clean-burning candles … and let me tell you, it wasn’t a simple process but I am so proud of the end product.
I hand pour small-batch candles in my home after bedtime routine is done.
I have proudly sourced all materials within Canada, and support other local small businesses whenever I can. TBW uses Coconut Wax, which is a clean-burning plant based wax. All fragrance oils are Paraben-Free and Phalate-Free, premium cotton wicks are used, and the jars can be cleaned out after use and repurposed. One other fact I did not consider, but learned during the process is that Soy is a common allergen. I have customers who have not been able to burn candles for decades, and now they can burn candles again. *happy dance*
I create my own labels at home, do my own product photography, run the website, look after shipping – the brand is me.
I had no expectations when I launched my products, and I have continuously been blown away by the support and amount of repeat customers “we” have.
What’s your bestselling product?
Cereal Dater is the OG candles and always sells!
Why do you think it’s so popular?
It is nostalgia in a jar. I love watching people open the lid and see their eyes light up – they say “it smells exactly like Fruit Loops!!”… and it does. This one is my own blend of oils, not just a ready-made one. I’m really proud of it. It smells so strong, but without being overpowering.
What’s your personal favourite product from your shop right now?
I use Beauty Sleep Linen Mist all the time. I spray my pillows and curtains and it makes my bedroom feel like a little retreat.
What’s your favourite local Ontario shop?
I have many! Krumbs Bakery, Chronicle Brewery, Roam Coffee, Picks and Giggles, Maple Grove Orchard, The Meat-A-Tarian…. I could go on and on.
