What inspired you to start your business?
After working in retail for several years, I knew I wanted to start my own business. After supporting small businesses and markets in my area, I was inspired to become part of that community. I was also seeing cute jar candles online from around the globe and decided to start making candles of my own and see where it would go. Now, in 2026, we have a retail shop of our own where we produce and sell our candles.
How do you describe your business?
At Peace & Quiet Candle Co., our focus is always on making life feel a little more cozy. We achieve this through the ambience of a beautiful, high quality candle that smells exactly like what it says on the label. We produce our candles inside our shop in Goods & Co. market, where we have a glass enclosure and open-concept space so you can see the candle-making process. We use 100% soy wax as it is a biodegradable, renewable resource so our customers can feel good about the candles they burn. We warm this up in our melting pots, working with 4 pounds of wax at a time. The wax goes through an initial cooling period, then we add our fragrance blends. Once the fragrance is added, the wax cools again and then we finish by pouring it by hand into each jar with care.
What’s your bestselling product?
Our bestselling product is our Sleeping Giant candle. The Sleeping Giant is a dramatic rock formation on Lake Superior that resembles a giant lying on its back and is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in our hometown of Thunder Bay. With notes of cedar bark, amber, spice, and a bit of citrus and floral, the scent of this candle was inspired by this landmark and the outdoor space that surrounds it.
Why do you think it’s so popular?
I think this candle is so popular because people travelling to visit love it as a little piece of Thunder Bay. I think our local folks love it for that reason as well. And aside from that, it is a very unique blend with a fresh, clean fragrance. Because there are several scent notes that play nicely together in this blend, I think most people can find a reason to enjoy it.
What’s your personal favourite product from your shop right now?
My personal favourite product from our shop right now is our Home Sweet Home candle. I love it because it smells like a warm basket of clean laundry, but with a bit more mood and depth. I also just feel like it’s the embodiment of the feeling our brand strives to create.
What’s your favourite local Thunder Bay shop?
My favourite local business is Sweet North Bakery. They make the best warm pretzels and lattes. They’ve also gone from starting small to now having 3 locations across our city, the newest one being attached to an Indigo. So their journey has been very inspiring too.
