What inspired you to open your shop?
It all started in 2019 when I was bored and flipping through YouTube videos. Eventually I came across Skyler Jenkins YouTube channel, Change You Can Wear! He specialized in making coin rings and producing high quality tutorial videos and illustrated that you can start with very minimal equipment, so I did just that… started off small. And just like that I was hooked, started making coin rings almost daily and eventually selling them!
After a couple years of making coin rings, it just wasn’t scratching my “creative itch” because you’re relatively limited to what you can do and which coins make for nice rings. Using money I saved up from selling coin rings, I went out and bought myself my first lathe! Ever since then it’s been a constant uphill journey of learning new skills, learning to work with a seemingly limitless variety of materials, meeting amazing new people and providing customers with a truly unique, hand-crafted ring!
How would you describe your business?
Badland Creations is a small business that specializes in handmade, one-of-a-kind rings built tough with blue-collar workers in mind. Using materials such as Stainless Steel, Titanium, Damascus and more, these rings are designed to take an absolute beating with minimal maintenance.
Having a background in woodworking, I have a soft spot for incorporating wood into my ring builds, burls being my favorite! In previous workplaces I have always had a strong attention to detail and been somewhat of a perfectionist, because of this I have always been quality driven vs quantity and “good enough” is never good enough.
One service / option I offer is to work with customer supplied materials. Maybe you have some old trinket / antique / random object that used to belong to a loved one, but all it does is collect dust in a closet somewhere… Rather than forget about this sentimental belonging, why not breathe new life into it and create something that you can look at every day and remember the loved one who gave it to you? Whenever I receive an order like this, it’s always such an honor that someone who may not even live in the same country, trusts me with such an important job! I will always share progress pictures and maybe the odd video of the ring being crafted because I don’t want to just sell a ring, I want to sell an experience. I want you to see these raw materials slowly turn into something you’ll get enjoyment out of for the rest of your life, that’s the Badland Creations promise.
What’s your best selling product and why is it so popular?
Damascus x Maple Burl Ring.
This combo right here…. you’re NEVER going to see two identical rings! Stainless Damascus is made from 2 different kinds of stainless steel that won’t tarnish or rust, and when you stick it into an acid bath, one of the two steels will dissolve while the other remains untouched, leaving you with an incredible, unique pattern that can’t be duplicated.
Second, we have Stabilized Maple Burl (stabilized means the wood has been impregnated with resin, making it more machinable, and durable!) which is packed with character! Maple Burl has a very cool quality about it, where sections of the grain look so fuzzy, you’d think you could pet it! Maple Burl in my experience will range from a medium-light brown up to a chocolate brown color and the grain will never disappoint, it’s truly a special wood that will always have a place in my shop.
What’s your favourite product from your own shop?
My personal favorite from my shop, is a ring that I wear every day, the Titanium x Black Web Trustone Ring. Trustone is a very cool material that resembles stone – I think it looks like marble. Paired with Titanium this is a very light-weight build that I forget I’m even wearing most of the time, and the contrast between the black, white and mirror polished metal is something I feel brings a classy look to the table.
What’s your favourite local business in Three Hills, Alberta?
My favourite local business is a restaurant named Harvest House. They have amazing food and huge portions at a fair price.
